About Us

Every week, volunteers meet on the beach side of MSE Library at Johns Hopkins Homewood campus to go to one of the two locations listed below. In pairs, volunteers teach a one-hour interactive lesson to a group of no more than four students. CRASH emphasizes teaching in small groups to facilitate a safe atmosphere to answer sensitive questions about sexual health. CRASH's newly designed curriculum focuses on teaching teens sexual health topics that directly pertain to their needs.

Wiliam Donald Schaefer House

"Situated across from the reservoir in Druid Hill Park in Baltimore City, the William Donald Schaefer House, which opened in 1992, provides services to young men 14 to 18 years of age and is fully accredited by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration (ADAA). Schaefer House residents are referred by juvenile counselors for substance abuse addiction treatment in a small, nurturing environment for an average stay of 90 days

To address and treat their substance use and addictions, youth at the Schaefer House receive intensive individualized and group counseling every day, attend alcohol and drug education classes twice a week, participate in Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and attend weekly health education classes given by the program's registered nurse.

Residents attend school five days per week, five hours per day in on-site classrooms. Youth either earn credits accepted by their home schools upon their release or prepare for the General Education exam. More than 93% of the Schaefer House residents who take the exam obtain a General Education Diploma (GED). Residents participate in community service projects and utilize the State Job Bank to learn employability skills which help them find jobs upon their release from care.

Once a youth has completed his residential treatment at the Schaefer House, he graduates to an intensive aftercare program in his community to maintain the support network necessary for a drug and alcohol free life."

Maryland Choice Program

The Choice Program is a community-based, family-centered case management approach to delinquency prevention and youth development. Focusing on providing support in at-risk environments, Choice empowers youth and engages families through a multitude of services adapted to individual needs. The program seeks to foster resiliency in young people by promoting protective factors to mitigate risk in their daily lives.

What began as a model program in Maryland also proved to be effective throughout the country. The Choice Program model has been successfully replicated in Hartford, Connecticut in 1997, San Diego, California in 1998, and Syracuse, New York in 2003. Evaluations of these programs demonstrate a similar impact to the results in Maryland: reduction in delinquent behavior and reducing out-of-home placements. Choice is recognized locally and nationally as a cost-effective, outcomes-based program.
